Pattern Making to Copy a Garment
3 hours | Up to 1 participants

Learn how to replicate your favourite clothes
Have a dress, top, or trousers you wish you could clone? In this private class, we’ll show you how to make a sewing pattern from an existing item of clothing, without pulling it apart.
You’ll learn how to trace around your garment to create a pattern, add seam allowances, and get the confidence to recreate it again and again. Whether it’s a vintage piece, your comfiest pair of trousers, or a favourite top you want in every colour, we’ll guide you through the process step by step.
This is a relaxed, beginner-friendly session for anyone who wants to learn the basics of DIY pattern making without diving into technical drafting. You’ll leave with a reusable pattern and the skills to do it again at home.
Please note: This class doesn’t include sewing the garment on the day, it’s all about learning how to create the pattern. If you’d like to sew it afterwards, we recommend booking a follow-up class.

- Participants need to have completed our Sewing For Beginners class, Intro to Garment Making, and Intro to Sewing Tops/Dresses. If you’ve developed your sewing skills elsewhere, you’ll need to have successfully sewn at least two garments following a commercial pattern and feel confident with your sewing.
- We welcome all genders and identities in our inclusive space.
- This is a private 3 hour session
- Bring the garment with you
- It’s easy to underestimate how long pattern making takes, especially for more detailed garments. While most patterns can be completed within the 3-hour session, complex designs may require multiple bookings to finish. If you’re unsure how long your garment might take, feel free to send us a photo before booking. We’ll be happy to give you a rough guide on what to expect.
- This is a pattern making session, not a sewing class – the focus is on creating a pattern from your garment, not constructing the final piece. In rare cases where the pattern is completed early, we’re happy to provide calico for toiling so you can begin testing your pattern. If you’ve already chosen fabric for your garment, feel free to bring it along – even if you don’t use it in this session, your teacher can advise on its suitability.
- If you’re unsure if your project is suitable, just reach out and we’ll chat it through
- Closed-toe shoes are recommended for your safety
- You’re welcome to bring your own sewing machine, or use one of ours. If you’re bringing your own machine, it must either be brand new or have been serviced within the last 12 months by a reputable sewing machine technician.
- Our studio unfortunately isn’t wheelchair accessible. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.
Due to high demand and limited class sizes, all bookings are final and non-refundable. We’re happy to reschedule your booking as long as it meets the conditions below:

Absolutely enjoyed the Sewing for Beginners class! Coming into the class, I was nervous at first, but Sophie made it so easy. I appreciate her detailed explanations of the machine and pointers, and her advice on buying a machine was super helpful. Highly recommend for anyone starting their sewing journey!

I cannot recommend Sydney Creative highly enough. I had the most incredible sewing class today. Sophie was so encouraging, and gave excellent and clear guidance. She gave me just what I needed and let me take it the rest of the way. She’s a fabulous teacher and is so passionate about her craft. Also, the space is lovely. I’m already planning my next class. If you’re considering doing a class with Sophie and Sydney Creative, do it, do it, do it!

I did the beginners sewing class on Saturday and it was great fun, the teacher Danni was really friends and clear with her instructions. If anyone can teach me to sew, they are amazing! I can’t wait to come back and do the earrings and pizza class. Thank you!
